New IP scam for New Zealand Businesses

We have become aware of a template email being sent to New Zealand businesses, purportedly from a New Zealand law firm, advising that their business name is being investigated as a trade mark by a third party and action is required within a very short time-frame.

If you receive a letter like this, we recommend you pause before taking any action to avoid costly steps with no or limited advantage to you.

We have found these letters might sent by firms who do not provide these services, or by writers who are not lawyers or registered patent or trade mark attorneys. Rather than rushing in to take action as proposed by the letter, if you already have an IP advisor, we recommend you review this correspondence with them to assess if any action is required.

If you do not already have an IP advisor, please do get in touch and we would be happy to assist.
